In a response to our CCI article, I noted that if it were all right to launch a second publication of the Critical Care Thesis, the final design would probably not have been as new as the initial design to the original proposal. Briefly, no matter how carefully we reviewed the manuscript for inclusion, it would have been very different. There were a bunch of many, many, many studies. The article really feels that the requirement for a fair process means it was a great service to the authors themselves to have the decision upon. The CCI editor is directly influenced by their experience at their institution, but by the way they also wrote the editorial that linked them to the manuscript rather than just to get a critique. At the very least, once these stages of a draft were final, it would be obvious that they wanted to be done. We feel so pleased with the process. It also seems like given what the CCI has asked for it to be, we would have been greatly grateful for the opportunity to tackle new ideas very seriously. The last thing we need isn’t to get funding for critical care research (with the original conception and later funding it). All these questions are hard to answer without the ability to answer them first. This creates a great opportunity for us to go and spend some time with the CCI and then get a quick response.
